Never Be Late to the Movies: A True Story
It was a Friday night in Paris, at the height of Tom Hardy’s popularity. The premiere of the first Venom movie was playing in theaters worldwide. Popcorn and soda in hand, people slowly filled the auditorium. Venom, a favorite character brought to life by Tom Hardy — all of this for just five euros after a long week of work.
Everyone took their seats, eagerly waiting for the story of extraterrestrial symbiotes to begin. As the lights dimmed, trailers for upcoming releases started playing. Suddenly, something clicked, and the ads played completely upside down and backward. The audience didn’t seem to mind, and light chuckles quickly spread across the rows.
The fun didn’t last long, though. The movie itself started playing upside down and from the very end. Setting our popcorn aside, we began to murmur in discontent along with the rest of the crowd. This lasted for about five minutes until someone presumably notified management. After all, projection rooms are automated now — nobody actually sits behind the lens anymore.
The screen went dark, something clicked again, and a movie began. An action scene was already in full swing as the opening credits rolled. Nobody was going to ask to restart it from the beginning — everyone was just eager to see Tom Hardy in action. But after a few minutes of watching, people in the audience began to squirm nervously and shine their phone lights on their tickets.
We didn’t get it at first either. Something was exploding on screen, and a guy was sitting inside a spacecraft. But when Ryan Gosling in a spacesuit appeared, our jaws dropped. Hold on! It’s not that we had anything against Gosling, but where was Hardy? Confusion filled the room. Thoughts raced through our heads: Did we walk into the wrong screen? Did we get the time wrong?
After a couple of minutes, someone finally realized we were watching First Man starring Ryan Gosling. A wave of outrage swept through the room. Angry moviegoers started shouting: “Give us our money back!”, “Turn off this @#*&#!”, “Are you out of your minds?” In the dark, people let loose. A booming bass voice from the middle row started chanting: “Ve-nom! Ve-nom!” Within seconds, the entire crowd joined in.
Fearing a second French Revolution right then and there, the theater staff took swift action. The house lights came on in the hall, and loud clicks echoed again.
Our protest was suddenly interrupted when a breathless young couple burst through the doors, horrified to realize they were twenty minutes late. An awkward silence fell over the room. A hundred pairs of eyes stared at them in total disbelief.
The couple, clearly embarrassed by the intense spotlight, broke the silence with a timid question: “Hasn’t the movie started yet?”
In absolute silence, the same booming voice from the middle row growled: “No, damn it! We were all waiting just for you!”
Right on cue, something clicked again, the lights went out, and Venom finally started. To the sound of roaring laughter, the couple practically crawled down the aisle to their seats in the front row.
They probably never showed up late to anything ever again!
