Genre: Drama, Horror, Action
Directors: Craig Mazin, Ali Abbasi, Jeremy Webb
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Anna Torv
Undoubtedly, The Last of Us is the most discussed TV series of 2023. The original video game, with which most fans compare the series, is to blame for this. But be that as it may, as of today, The Last of Us is one of the best examples of video game adaptations in history. The script, acting, atmosphere, set designs, music – there’s really nothing to complain about. The Last of Us is not just a story about a video game; it’s a work about people, about us, about our flaws, and what we are willing to do for ourselves and our loved ones.

The special TV edition in two episodes shows us the essence of humanity as a whole and how cyclic our history is. Even if you haven’t followed this anime, it’s worth watching to perceive through its characters the modern humanity. Here you can find numerous allegories and references to what is happening in our reality. A magnificent anime in every sense, and a fantastic finale to one of the most amazing stories.

© Banjjakineun Witeomellon / Pan Entertainment, tvN
Genre: Melodrama, Music, Fantasy
Director: Son Jeong-hyeon
Starring: Ryeoun, Choi Hyeon-wook, Seol In-ah
K-dramas, or South Korean series, never cease to amaze with their wonderful atmosphere of warmth and sincere emotions. Banjjakineun Witeomellon is a musical series about our youth and the theme of children’s and parents’ relationships. All of this is beautifully complemented by the fantastic narrative element, where the main character can time-travel. The main highlight of the series is the incredible harmony between the serious themes touched upon and the wonderful manner of presenting all these heart-wrenching issues that will reach every heart.
Beef
© Beef / A24, Netflix
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Directors: Jake Schreier, Kiyoka Miyazaki, Lee Sung Jin
Starring: Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, Joseph Lee
How nice it is to once again feel the excitement of spending entire weekends glued to a series and only interrupting it to eat. Undoubtedly, Beef is the main series of 2023 that you absolutely cannot miss. Everything is excellent here: from the visual component and the dedicated performances of the actors to the allegorical demonstration by the creators of the series of our sadness, loneliness, complexes, and the inability to talk to each other. Definitely the best series in recent times that inspires each of us to say a simple ‘Sorry’ instead of a harsh word.
Scavengers Reign
© Scavengers Reign / Titmouse, Inc., Max
Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Adventure
Directors: Benjy Brooke, Vincent Tsui, Jonathan Djob Nkondo
Voice roles: Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Bob Stephenson
Even if you’re not a fan of animated projects and science fiction, Scavengers Reign definitely deserves attention. It’s a beautiful animated series with a unique setting and references to the style and philosophy of Hayao Miyazaki. When watching this anime, you marvel at the imagination of the creators, who managed to intricately develop the surrounding world, where the main characters, amidst their desperate struggle for survival, delve into their own experiences. A solid and original story that raises numerous questions for the viewer, with answers not easily given.
A Small Light
© A Small Light / ABC Studios, Disney+
Genre: Drama, Biography, History
Directors: Susanna Fogel, Tony Phelan, Leslie Hope
Starring: Billie Boullet, Bel Powley, Joe Cole
Another series, another true story, proving to everyone how war is the most repugnant and disgusting thing that can exist in our reality. It’s not just a story about the past; it’s a story about the present, when even now, in our civilized world, the same things are happening. This series tells us that we should never close our eyes to what is inherently horrible and abhorrent. The excellent performances by the actors and the visual aspect of the series only emphasize the full drama of our human nature, showing that even in the most challenging situations, we can remain human and not turn into monsters.
Daisy Jones & The Six
© Daisy Jones & The Six / Amazon Studios, Amazon Prime Video
Genre: Drama, Romance, Music
Directors: James Ponsoldt, Nzingha Stewart, William Graham
Starring: Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone
A nostalgic pseudo-biographical series about the rise and fall of a fictional rock band is unlikely to leave you indifferent, even if you’re far from the music and vibes of the ’70s. At the heart of the story are ordinary broken human destinies that somehow found their haven in this world through music. The creators of the series brilliantly show us what we actually hide behind our “masks.” A splendid adaptation of the book of the same name, and a perfect story about how pop culture is, above all, a triumph of self-deception over reality, and of form over substance.
Blue Eye Samurai
© Blue Eye Samurai / Netflix Animation, Netflix
Genre: Thriller, Drama, Adventure
Directors: Earl A. Hibbert, Jane Wu, Michael Green
Voice roles: Maya Erskine, George Takei, Masi Oka
Blue Eye Samurai is an unexpected but confident hit, comparable in quality only to the masterpiece Arcane. However, this project is more serious and profound, fully exploring themes of personal development, morality, stories of good and evil, and the search for oneself. Truly important things that are talked about and narrated less these days. It’s very pleasing that all of this is overlaid with the visually appealing Japanese stylistic touches with hints of Hollywood culture. A very serious animated series primarily aimed at an adult audience.
Silo
© Silo / Mímir Films, Apple TV+
Genre: Science Fiction, Drama, Thriller
Directors: Adam Bernstein, Morten Tyldum, Bert
Starring: Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Tim Robbins
What if your world is unreal? If everything you believed in is just someone else’s total lie? This is the perfect premise for creating the most intriguing science fiction stories. Silo is the top contender for the best series of 2023, all thanks to these questions and Hugh Howey’s series of books where the remnants of humanity surviving in a bunker are incredibly realistically portrayed. The series is definitely worth attention, especially if you enjoy post-apocalyptic settings and a narrative style that requires analysis and sometimes even speculation on the part of the viewer.
One Piece
© One Piece / Shueisha, Netflix
Genre: Thriller, Drama, Adventure
Directors: Marc Jobst, Tim Southam, Emma Sullivan
Starring: Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu
